The two retailers announced the partnership, which will start with a location near San Antonio in February, and then expand to 14 additional locations in Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina by the end of March, CNBC reported.
The brands formed the partnership because of growing pet ownership during the pandemic, USA Today reported, saying more than 11 million pets have been brought into homes over the last two years. “People are spending more time in their homes, investing to make their homes better places to live and better places for their pets to live in as well,” Nick Konat, Petco’s chief merchandising officer told USA Today.
The mini Petco shops will offer food along with pet services, like vaccination clinics and grooming services, The Washington Post reported. The shops will have Petco’s label and merchandise, including some of its exclusive labels, CNBC reported.
Lowe’s had previously looked to branch out its offerings, adding home décor, fitness equipment, and some pet goods like dog beds, CNBC reported. Lowe’s executive vice president, Marisa Thalberg, told USA Today that 60% of people the company spoke to “indicated they’d be more likely to shop at a home improvement retailer if they could also purchase all their pet needs in the same place.”
Petco operates more than 1,500 stores in the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico. Lowe’s has 2,200 stores in the U.S. and Canada, The Washington Post reported.
